If you feel you are not computer savvy, then choosing to transfer your files to another host may be complicated. On top of the technical problems that you may encounter, you may also find out that your current host doesn’t want to let you go as a customer. To prevent from getting too annoyed, the information in this article can help you make the transition stress-free.
It would be wise before you choose to transfer files to a new web host to do your proper research. One thing to make sure your new host includes enough space / bandwidth, 24/7 technical support, you can easily upgrade, and most importantly backups all of your files automatically.
The next thing to do is download all your website files onto your computer. The easiest way do to this is by using your current web host’s FTP to transfer all of your files from you server to a folder on your computer. If your web site contains a database like WordPress, then make sure to copy it and also download it to your computer before canceling your account.
Once you’ve successfully downloaded all of your website files to your computer, the next step is to change the nameservers. Login to your domain registrar’s account and find your DNS settings where your old namerservers are. Now, just change those nameservers to the new nameservers that your new web host has provided you with. The new nameservers should take effect anywhere between 24-48 hours before your site is public again.
Once you have changed your nameservers, it is now time to upload your files to your new webhost. To do this just open up your desired FTP program, choose the folder containing your site files and transfer them to the root folder of your server. To check that your files transferred correctly simply type in your domain name into URL address bar in any browser.
Last but not least, canceling your old host provider after transferring your files is the next thing to do. Just make sure before you do, that you have copied all necessary files or you will not be able to copy them once your old hosting account is deleted.
