By the same token, employers should understand that there are different types of tests that could use samples of saliva, urine, or hair.

A good time to screen for drugs is prior to hiring employees, or after a workplace accident has occurred. With regards to the latter, it will serve to protect the company in many ways, such as with liability. For instance, if the employee was intoxicated or under the influence during the time of the accident, he or she would not be able to sue or get benefits that would normally be offered in such a situation.

Some employees will take a leave of absence for whatever reason, and this proves to be another good time to test them. It helps to ensure that they are in top physical form and credible enough to return to the job.

Random tests are often conducted by companies, but they remain controversial. Some believe that it infringes on the rights of individuals. Nonetheless, they are performed by some companies and that would require employees to remain drug-free in order to maintain their jobs. If this is not possible, then they will have to find employment elsewhere because when being tested randomly, one never knows when they should stay clean. So, it is a good way to clean house.

Individuals who are under the influence, either at work or at home can interfere with production. For one thing, they may be absent too many times. For another thing, they may not be able to focus on their duties. The bottom line is that employees are hired and maintain their jobs help to keep the company in business, to some degree. If they are not able to complete their tasks and act responsibly, then the company will suffer.

Sometimes, entrepreneurs or managers shy away from such programs because they have already developed relationships with their employees. However, those in charge should also see the relationships for what they really are. In such cases, perhaps screening pre-employment would be best, as it is easy to turn someone away before getting to know them.
